A number of churches that previously sponsored Boy Scout troops have said they plan to sever ties to the organization following its decision to lift a longtime national ban on admitting openly gay Scouts. Openly gay adults will still be barred from leadership roles in the organization.
"I think I can say with pretty strong accuracy that the vast majority of Southern Baptists are very disappointed in the latest change in policy ... deeply disappointed," Frank Page, president of the Southern Baptist Convention's executive committee, told ABCNews.com.
Page said that the Southern Baptist Convention -- the largest Protestant denomination in the United States -- would be holding its national meeting in two weeks, after which it would likely recommend that its 47,000 U.S. churches pull away from the Boy Scouts of America. From there, it is up to each individual church to decide what to do, said Page.
About 70 percent of all local Boy Scout troops are supported by religious groups, according to the Boy Scouts of America, and the Southern Baptist Convention currently sponsors "hundreds of troops, probably thousands," Page said.
"We don't hate people," said Page. "We don't hate anybody, but we just felt like there's got to be some objective standard, and we felt they were maintaining that until recently."
The Mormon church, which sponsors most of the troops, has endorsed allowing gay Scouts. The Roman Catholic Church, the second-largest troop sponsor, has said it was going to use the time before the new policy takes effect on Jan. 1 to think about how and if it would affect the church.
The National Jewish Committee on Scouting, the Episcopal Church, the United Church of Christ, the Unitarian Universalist Association and the Metropolitan Community Church all urged full repeal of the longtime ban.

But many other Christian groups continue to protest, citing religious freedom and the 2000 U.S. Supreme Court decision that gave the Boy Scouts the constitutional right to keep out gay members.
The Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, KY, which has about 300 families who participate in Scouting, also announced its plan to break its Boy Scout ties.
"Truly, for us it's a logical decision," Tim Hester, the church's executive pastor, told the Courier-Journal newspaper. "We cannot be distracted from the mission God has called us to."
Last week's decision to lift the ban was a "catalyst" in breaking away from the Boy Scouts but was not the church's only reason for doing so, Hester said, citing directional differences between the organization and the church.
"We want everyone, including ourselves, to live by biblical standards," Hester told the newspaper.
Hester did not immediately respond to ABCNews.com's request for comment.
One of the first religious organizations to denounce the Boy Scout's new policy on allowing gay members was the Assemblies of God, the world's largest Pentecostal group, saying in a statement, "We believe that the BSA policy change will lead to a mass exodus from the Boy Scout program, as Assemblies of God and many other churches can no longer support groups that are part of an organization allowing members who are openly homosexual."
Page, of the Southern Baptist Convention, echoed that sentiment. "I warned Scouting executives that this would happen, and they supposedly realized it would happen, but they thought they would gain more," Page said. "I assured them that if your goal is to minister to the largest number of youth, those were their words, then changing this is going to be a detriment to your goal."
The Boy Scouts said in a statement that it respected the "deeply held" religious beliefs of its members but encouraged them to read the resolution about the new policy. "We believe this policy is reflective of the beliefs of most of Scouting's major religious chartered organizations and are unaware of any that believe a youth member simply stating he or she is attracted to the same sex, but not engaging in sexual activity, should make him or her unwelcome in their congregation. While people have different opinions about this policy, we can all agree that kids are better off when they are in Scouting."
Gay rights advocates believe the Boy Scouts' new policy may actually attract new organizations and members who may have been put off by its former practices.
Another great American institution shot to hell by the "tolerant-Left"

Scouting for Boys
Well, folks ... another iconic American institution bites the dust. Another episode of the few controlling the many. No matter which side of the argument one is on, heres an irrefutable fact: The Boy Scouts of America has lifted its ban on openly gay scouts (see link to article below), and that means the Boy Scouts of America is finished. This is the beginning of its end. Done. Kaput. Over and out. Not only do most parents send their kids to scouting early on BECAUSE OF their Judeo-Christian values, but most troops benefit from the generosity of traditional Christian groups for financial support as well as places to meet to hold Scout activities. Those support groups are now alienated, and the BSA will lose so much support, so fast, it will be rendered a has-been organization in the very near future.
And, of course, the BSA is saying that the ban on gay adult scout leaders still stands, but c™mon ... who are we kidding here ... that's not going to hold for too long. Having pushed their way into destroying an American institution, homosexual-rights groups have already said the proposed policy change doesn't go far enough, because a gay scout must quit the organization when he turns 18. And, let's face it, you just know they'll be militant LGBT watch dog groups standing by ready to sue at the slightest verbal offense taken by a gay scout. Boys won't be able to be boys anymore.
I'm sick and tired of the gay rights movement trying to force their values on the American people and organizations, and of the continued progressive march "forward" to tear down anything that smacks of traditional morals and demonize those who disagree with their lifestyle.
I'm sick and tired of how the LGBT community demands that they be accepted by millions of Americans who don't agree with them, and who in large numbers are repulsed by them. They're never, EVER going to change or regulate the acceptance of their lifestyle by those who vehemently oppose it and who have the right to raise THEIR children with THEIR morals and values and religious beliefs, and NOT have anyone else's fostered upon THEIR kids.
Refusing to push homosexuality into our children's lives isn't discrimination. Telling someone with whom I don't agree NOT to push an agenda on MY kids, is not discrimination. People need to get a dictionary and look up the definition of that word. The REAL people being discriminated against are Christians (and I am not Christian) who only want to remain true to their faith without celebrating something with which they do not agree. You do not need to CELEBRATE homosexuality in order to TOLERATE homosexuality. There is a clear and distinct line between the two ... and a private organization being badgered and pummeled by activists in order to force them to change their PRIVATE organization to meet the needs of a statistical anomaly is true discrimination!
Refusing to "welcome" or encourage homosexuality into the conversations we have with our children is NOT intolerance. It's standing on principle. It IS, however, mighty intolerant of the LGBT and progressive communities not to accept the fact that the Boy Scouts did not allow or want homosexuals in the organization. Message to the LGBT community: We heterosexuals promise not to force our heterosexuality on you, and you had better NOT continue to force your homosexuality on us.
A man who has sex with a man is a homosexual. A man who has sex with a boy, which is called cherry picking, is a pedophile. Imagine how a cherry picking homosexual sees the boy scouts? A target rich environment? You betcha! The only thing a lot of gay men would be doing in the Boy Scouts would be scouting for boys. Can't you just see the NAMBLA vultures overhead slowly circling the camp sites waiting to see how this plays out?
Hey, I have a great idea: Since there's no law that bans homosexuals from starting their OWN nationwide scouting organization, let them unite, fund and form one. Lord knows there's enough liberal elitist money in Hollywood and the arts to do so. Families would then have a choice as to which organization they want their child to be in, and THEN let's see which one thrives. And, hey ... they can call the organization the "Gay Rainbow Scouts," coordinate with NAMBLA for man-boy-love camp fire jamboree's and pass out progressive sodomy badges.

How the Boy Scouts Could Save the Nation

61% of the 1,400 or so delegates at the recent Boy Scout Leadership meeting voted to admit openly homosexual boys to Scouting. They also denied homosexual adult Scout leaders. Two bold questions need to be asked.
1. How does a young boy know he's openly homosexual unless someone suggests it?
2. What did the Boy Scouts learn about their own leadership?
My home was recently infested with Brazilian cereal moths. They're tiny things that reproduce before your eyes and get into everything from Bisquick to candied pecans to Raisin Bran. I tried sprays and finally settled on a simple sex trap; not unlike what the "progressives" use on every moral and spiritual value that made this country great.
The trap features a little red square (how appropriate!) that carries a pheromone, a targeted sexual attractant that draws the moths to it. As they fly into the trap, the sticky sides snare them and they remain stuck until they die of exhaustion.
1. The great strength of Scouting has always been to develop young men by testing their courage and drawing out latent skills and talents. The experience will serve them the rest of their lives. Scouting succeeds because it serves true diversity: the development of diverse skills and talents through hard-earned Badges in areas of interest to the individual Scout.
Boys are aware of their blossoming sex drives. Scouting has always guided them to discover their roles as young men born to serve God, Country and one another. Isn't this more important than being drawn like moths to the "progressive" sex trap?
I've long held that sexual impulse of any type is offset by a person's innate creativity and penchant for service. The difference between human beings and all other creatures is that we have been gifted with a rational mind and free will that does not enslave us to our passions.
Most boys will grow and develop into men ready to head a family and defend it as God commands and the Constitution provides. Others will find their creative and intellectual gifts lead them into other areas of risk and reward, of service to others. Their sexuality will take care of itself as they concentrate on discovering and testing their capabilities.
2. What is it about Scout leaders that drew them to vote as they did?
Jesus stated that for someone to destroy the innocence of young ones, it would be better for the predator to have a millstone hung around his neck and be tossed into the sea. He saw that as an eternal preventative to save the predator's own soul before he did something stupid.
The person dedicated to serving others, especially the young, is often left alone with his thoughts and impulses. One must never divert boys skill and character development toward obsession with sexuality.
The answer lies in 1 Corinthians 10:13: No test has been sent you that do not come to all men. Besides, God keeps his promise. He will not let you be tested beyond your strength. Along with the test he will give you a way out so that you may be able to endure it. God's love and wisdom is shown with our endowment of a free will. He provides us with a barrier against temptation. What good is His guidance if we're not paying attention? We must do our part and instill it in our boys.
The Boy Scouts and the schools they attend will win this great battle in spiritual warfare by embracing God as complementary to the mission of education and skill development. They could explore the balance between creativity, service and sexuality without progressive obsessions. Young people would come to understand how wonderfully they are made. They are designed for greatness and have the free will and the freedom in this Constitutional Republic to choose a path. Anything short of that deserves The Millstone Award.
